Do you have one cranky canine bowel system?  If so, here are some ideas for getting your pooch on the path to well being.

Know Thy Evil

Seriously, you have you know why your dog is sick and breaking out all over in hives, and worms can be a cause of this as well as allergies so check that option out first before you go ripping into the dog’s diet. Worms will make a dog scoot on the carpet, but then they may not exhibit that particular behavior either so do some digging to find out. Take the dog in for prescription de worming medication, the over the counter stuff doesn’t work. Eliminate every other dermises issue before blaming the food. Bottom like is your problem is one of two, a food allergy or a food intolerance. Dog food allergies will be maifested in the dry itchy flakey skin. Food intolerance is going to be diarhea and vomiting, and everytime they get sick may not be a food intolerance.

Curb The Crap

If you don’t, you will spend forever trying to chase down the little ghost causing your dog’s intolerance or allergy.  That means no more treats, no more table scraps, only one type of dog food and water.  Period.  It is likely to be something the dog shouldn’t have any way that is causing the problem, and you are going to have to crack down in your house hold about it.  For example, my little fuzzy muttly (What else to you call a 25% Pomeranian 50% Shih Tzu 25% Shetland Sheepdog?) pukes all over when my father-in-law crams a lime sized piece of chocolate brownie down her face.  She weighs 7 lbs.  Food intolerance?  I’ll let you decide that one, but these guys will actually have gall enough to tell you “Oh no, must be the eggs in it she’s reacting too.”  Yeah, and the poisonous piece of chocolate has nothing to do with the fact she’s up chucking all over my car.  Try to remember, don’t be feeding your dog garbage like this and complaining to me about your pet’s “Food Intolerance”.

How To Read The Writing On The Wall

In any event, be it food intolerance or allergy, you will have to run the course of chasing these issues.   Allergies will take longer to run down the cause.  First try beef and corn, if after twelve weeks your situation doesn’t change, try lamb and rice for twelve weeks.  If that doesn’t work, switch again and keep at each diet with no treats or snacks for a twelve week period of time.  Eight week is simply not enough for most dogs to manifest the allergy.  Food intolerances will usually show up pretty quick, I’m sure you have that figured out by now.
